South Organic Fruits

Best alternatives to organic?
I’m curious what people know (and I’m also a bit lazy so I’m asking here) about produce in general.
So say I’m buying inorganic food (vegetables/fruit/grains/legumes in particular). Environmentally speaking, what sort of crops have least strain? I live in southern WI, so, I would suppose anything local would be a start even if it isn’t organic.
And what types of organic vegetables are produced in the most sustainable ways? I’ve been wondering about soy in particular- I know that many inorganic soy fields are the results of deforestation and putting traditional farmers out of work, among aother atrocities (South America is a fine example of these sort of practices). Is organic soy going to necessarily be any better?
I know these questions are quite broad, but thanks for reading!!
if you are eating conventionally grown soy (inorganic is a chemistry term that means an item is not carbon based, conventionally grown is how food is farmed if it is not organic) it is likely GMO soy as about 85% of all soy grown in the USA and Canada is GMO. GMO’s are to be avoided and can be if you eat only organic soy. So yes organic soy is a lot better and one of the food items that should be organic only in ones diet. Corn, canola and cotton seed meal/oil also all have GMO counter parts and like soy should be avoided unless organic.

Farming has a pretty high carbon foot print-even organic farming unless it is done with horse/human power and all inputs are generated on-farm. you will find local farms doing this kind of management but anything that is national organic (as opposed to locally grown) will not fit this description. Not to mention, most is shipped thousands of miles.
Food bought from small (under 100 acres) diversified farms (grows animals, vegetables, trees, grains, fruits) that practice sustainable management or are certified organic and have been for over 10 years is your best bet. You live in an area that has over 20 such farms and you should be able to find well grown local food pretty much year round
