Is there Scientific Proof that God Exists? Part 1

   It has been suggested that there is no scientific proof for the existence of God. This assertion is simply not accurate. Recent scientific evidence strongly points to the existence of God. Specifically, the existence of God is demonstrated in 1) the evidence of the “Big Bang”; 2) the Design of the Universe; 3) the fine tuning of the Universe; 4) the fine tuning of earth’s biosphere; 5) the complexity of organisms discovered by microbiology and microchemistry; 6) the information in DNA; 7) the existence of consciousness in the brain; and the sense of common morality throughout the world. This Article will consider points 1 and 2. Future articles will consider the additional scientific evidence. Nevertheless, science continues to either ignore or deny the existence of God for a variety of reasons that will be considered in part 4 of this series of Articles. 1. The scientific evidence for a chain of causations needs to be grounded in a first cause (the “Big Bang”) that is itself uncaused pointing to a First Mover. This evidence for the existence of God is sometimes referred to as the “Kalam Cosmological Argument” which is frequently credited to the Muslim philosopher al-Ghazali.  Namely, 1) whatever begins to exist has a cause; 2) the universe began to exist; 3) the universe has a cause. Science supports the argument that something (or someone, a First Mover) caused the beginning of the universe. Evidence for a “Big Bang” that “caused” the origin of the universe has been generally accepted in the scientific community for some time. Well known physicist Stephen Hawking, for example, with renowned co-author, mathematician, and physicist Robert Penrose assert that “Almost everyone now believes that the universe, and time itself, had a beginning at the Big Bang.”  Physician-geneticist Francis Collins agrees:
We have this very solid conclusion that the universe had an origin, the Big Bang… That implies that before that, there was nothing. I can’t imagine how nature, in this case the universe, could have created itself. And the very fact that the universe had a beginning implies that someone was able to begin it. And it seems to me that had to be outside of nature.

Stephen Hawking agrees, “The odds against a universe like ours emerging out of something like the Big Bang are enormous. I think there are clearly religious implications… It would be difficult to explain why the universe would have begun in just this way except as the act of a God who intended to create beings like us.”  Alan Rex Sandage, protégé of the legendary Rex Hubble and generally recognized as the greatest observational cosmologist in the world, concurs that the “Big Bang” means there must be a “First Cause” that transcends science. Specifically, “…The world is much more complicated than can be explained by science. It was only through the supernatural that I can understand the mystery of existence.”  Similarly, Robert Jastrow, founder and former director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies asserts, “…three lines of evidence – the motion of the galaxies, the laws of thermodynamics, and the life story of the stars – pointed to one conclusion: all indicated that the Universe had a beginning.”  In reference to the life story of the stars, Jastrow explains as follows:

“No explanation other than the big bang has been found for the fireball radiation. The clincher, which has convinced almost the last doubting Thomas, is that the radiation discovered by Penzias and Wilson has exactly the pattern of wavelengths expected for the light and heat produced by a great explosion. Supporters of the Steady State theory have tried desperately to find an alternative explanation, but they have failed.”

Such scientific evidence Jastrow, Hawking, Sandage, Collins, and other scientists have determined leaves us with only one conclusion, there was a beginning of the universe. Moreover, Jastrow, a historically staunch agnostic, continues, “That there are what I or anyone would call supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact.” Thus, others have concluded and we must conclude that something exists which first moved or caused the universe. The existence of this first mover or supernatural force is not only logical, scientific evidence supports its existence. This something, this First Mover, is believed by many scientists to be scientifically proven by “the motion of the galaxies, the laws of thermodynamics, and the life story of the stars”.

2. Design in the Universe points to an Intelligent Designer.  Microbiologist Michael Denton has observed that just as the moving parts, complexity, and intricate design of a watch reasonably leads to the conclusion that it was intelligently designed  so molecular biology reveals that even the smallest cells possess “supreme technology and bewildering complexity …beyond our own creative capacities, …the very antithesis of chance, which excels in every sense anything produced by the intelligence of man.”  Physicist Robin Collins notes that “the universe’s remarkable “just-so” conditions are widely regarded as by far the most persuasive current argument for the existence of God.”  Beyond that the wonder of the universe with 70 sextillion stars, the study of your hand which “has far more moving parts, displays much more intricate design,”  and otherwise requires a much more intelligent designer than a watch, as well as the incredible beauty of nature offer compelling evidence for microbiologist Michael Denton to conclude that the universe in general and life in particular must come from an Intelligent Designer.

Even Nobel-winning physicist Steven Weinberg, an avowed atheist, concedes that “sometimes nature seems more beautiful than strictly necessary.”  Similarly, Vera Kistiakowski, professor of physics emerita at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology comments that the implications of “The exquisite order displayed by our scientific understanding of the physical world calls for the divine.”

Harvard Professor, Owen Gingerich, agrees, “I believe that …the Book of Nature, with its astounding details – the blade of grass, the Conus cedonulli [beautiful spiral shaped sea shells], or the resonance levels of the carbon atom – suggests a God of purpose and a God of design. And I think my belief makes me no less of a scientist.”
