Strong Organic Bases

Organic Skin Care is Just Marketing Unless You Find a Line Backed Up by Science
Some organic or natural skin care products are better than others. Some of them are marketed well enough, but are not supported by any clinical information that they do any good. Sounds great to hear about an extract taken from a rare tree in some jungle on the other side of the world that the locals have always known about and is now just discovered. But if there isn’t any science to back it up, it’s probably not what it claims to be.
Don’t worry though, because there is organic skin care that is backed up by science. Clinical trials that show conclusively that skin can be restored to full health and that those pesky signs of aging can be significantly reduced. It’s not in the packaging – it’s all in the ingredients.
We’ve known for some time that keratin is a natural protein that is one of the basic building blocks of our skin. And many skin care products have this as a base ingredient. However most of them aren’t truly organic because of the processing methods used to produce it. They all involve high temperatures and acid so by the time the final ingredient is isolated for inclusion into a skin care product, much of the goodness and nutrient value has been destroyed.
There is a new organic form of keratin though that is produced without heat or acid. This keratin is produced from the wool of New Zealand sheep and it is isolated through a special emulsion process. The result is a completely organic base ingredient that provides much of the natural nutrients in your skin.
It penetrates into the deepest layers of your skin and brings all the skin’s natural nutrients with it. It has been clinically proven to boost the skin’s ability to produce collagen and elastin (the two proteins that give skin firmness and elasticity) which is important because as we age we deplete these.
It supports the skin’s ability to rejuvenate itself, the natural way. And the clinical trials show a 42% increase in skin elasticity in 14% improvement in moisture retention after just 18 days. Those are facts.
Of course, this isn’t the only ingredient in a quality organic skin care line of products. Your skin also needs a source of antioxidants to fight free radicals and essential oils that moisturize and bring more nutrients. And of course, not all plant oils will do your skin any good – but some are incredible! Just remember, if there aren’t clinical trials to back up the claims, it’s just marketing.

Is this an SN2 or E2 reaction??? (organic chemistry) Help!!?
I can’t figure it out. Here’s the reaction:
FIND THE MAJOR PRODUCT OF
2-bromo-3,3,4,4-tetramethylpentane + conc. OH(-)
Since OH(-) is a strong base, the reaction conditions should be SN2/E2 rather than SN1/E1, right?
Well I can’t figure out the next step. I know there are 2 beta carbons available for the OH(-) to pull off a hydrogen. However, the least H-substituted C has no hydrogens at all. So does the hydrogen leave the other carbon (C #1)? Or does the reaction go to substitutuion?
It should heavily favor the formation of the alkene (C1=C2). I’m basing this on a few things:
1) hydroxide is a rather wimpy nucleophile and a better base
2) this is a secondary alkyl halide which should favor the E2 elimination in the presence of a strong base and a poor nucleophile (sn2 should mainly happen if there was a weak base/weak or strong nucleophile)
3) since this is a secondary halide and a rather hindered one at that (the geminal methyls alpha to the halide) Sn2 is not likely because of steric hindrance
4) high concentration of strong base/poor nucleophile
As a side note, your terminology is not really correct. The 2 methyls on the 3rd carbon are ALPHA to the halide, not beta (although there are also 2 methyls on the beta carbon in this case) and there are no protons on them to pull off. The only choice the base has is to remove a C1 proton to eliminate the bromide.
